Camille Saint-Saëns - Symphony No. 3 in C minor Op. 78 (The Organ Symphony) :: Adagio - Allegro moderato
happy birthday Camille. i have forgiven you for your uncouth attitude towards your superiors and damnable success within your own lifetime. thank you for the beautiful music, your third symphony is a favorite of mine. i will post the remaining movements over the next few days.a brief word on the opening movement.
the opening “Adagio” portion of the symphony only lasts around one minute and is sublime in orchestration and patience. you are slowly and captivatingly invited into the piece rather than brought to attention by a domineering school marm. just as the Adagio completes and a prolonged string swells lays you down to rest, a pizzicato bass figure segways into a conservative but very appealing main theme. you’ll recognize it. like Brahms, Mendelssohn and the rest of the Romantic conservatives, Saint-Saëns was supernaturally gifted at the art of realizing classical idioms in invigorating news ways. the rest of the movement tosses the action back and forth between this original theme and an unabashedly “heroic” brass theme (ba duh DAAAA duh, ba duh DAAAA duh) much to the listeners delight.
