“When I was young there were beatniks. Hippies. Punks. Gangsters. Now you’re a hacktivist. Which I would probably be if I was 20. Shuttin’ down MasterCard. But there’s no look to that lifestyle! Besides just wearing a bad outfit with bad posture. Has WikiLeaks caused a look? No! I’m mad about that. If your kid comes out of the bedroom and says he just shut down the government, it seems to me he should at least have an outfit for that.”

ataxiwardance: Humorous #truthbombs from John Waters. It’s shallow but I agree that we need to cultivate the many languages (both cultural and intellectual) of dissent.

“Let us begin our activism right here: with the money-driven villainy at the heart of American foreign policy. To do this would be to give up the illusion that the sentimental need to “make a difference” trumps all other considerations. What innocent heroes don’t always understand is that they play a useful role for people who have much more cynical motives. The White Savior Industrial Complex is a valve for releasing the unbearable pressures that build in a system built on pillage. We can participate in the economic destruction of Haiti over long years, but when the earthquake strikes it feels good to send $10 each to the rescue fund. I have no opposition, in principle, to such donations (I frequently make them myself), but we must do such things only with awareness of what else is involved. If we are going to interfere in the lives of others, a little due diligence is a minimum requirement.”

Joseph Stiglitz and Jeff Madrick @ #occupywallstreet Open Economic Forum

Charming, accurate and powerful speech from the world’s most respected and accomplished living economist at Occupy Wall Street.

This little schoolhouse recital of the basic facts of class warfare in the 21st century is the most heart warming and empowering thing I’ve heard out of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

In Wisconsin, over 100% of the signatures necessary to recall state senator Dan Kapanke.

For sure.

I have to admit I’m a little surprised they actually pulled it off.  I guess Democracy still works eh?

i’d like to all remind all Chicagoans that tomorrow is our Aldermanic and Mayoral election. i don’t know as much about this election as i’d like to but i still encourage everyone to participate. i’ll be doing some election day volunteering at an old folks home in Pilsen from noon to night. local politics!

i admit, it’s a humbling thought to consider that there are people through-out the Pan-Arabic world struggling and dying for the right to representation that we enjoy so routinely. this country has a lot of problems (this photo is taken from a Chicagoist article on corruption) but we still enjoy a level of democratic freedom that is enviable in the grand scope of human history.

democracy is only a valuable social choice function if we exercise it!
