I really do inhabit a system in which words are capable of shaking the entire structure of government, where words can prove mightier than ten military divisions.
—Vaclav Havel, 1936 – 2011
Vaclav Havel, the dissident playwright who wove theater into politics to peacefully bring down communism in Czechoslovakia and become a hero of the epic struggle that ended the Cold War, has died. He was 75.
Havel was a hero to many all over the world, especially those living under autocratic regimes, and with good reason: He was a co-author, in January 1977, of the human rights manifesto Charter 77 and, under his leadership, the Czech Republic formally included international human rights obligations as a foundational part of its new constitution.
A brave and beautiful man. An inspiration to my family, myself, and millions more.
