Don’t know how I keep this magic show going.
Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.
—The forgotten/ignored economic argument that all value is work. Money is only a convenient way to exchange or barter ‘work’. The citizenship creates the wealth of work. Government then follows and creates money. Government then taxes this wealth in order to provide for the US Constitution mandated ‘general welfare’ of ALL citizens. (via politicalprof)well!
today is my last day at the Center for Economic Progress.
it’s been a crazy three years and i have strong mixed feelings about leaving.
while i’ll probably post my full thoughts on this line of work, my experiences and departing later, for now i’d like to remind any Chicago / Illinois residents of the excellent work the Center does and how YOU can be a part of it. we serve over 30,000 low income families throughout the state every year with free tax, financial, legal and higher education services. none of it would be possible with the excellent corp of 1,200 volunteers that offer their time, skills and passion to us. i’ve seen first hand the incredible impact our volunteers have on the lives of our state’s hardest working people and those moments of service, connection and moral calling are truly priceless. feels better than ANY number of reblogs.
just something to think about.
just went into boss mode for five straight hours delivering a remarkably complex and original electronic public benefits toolkit (which i totally planned, directed and wrote myself) training to 20 members of the Asian Pacific American collaborative with little to no English or technological proficiency.
my voice is gone.
my body is tired.
my blood is 90% coffee.
and i’m smiling.
(COMO UN JEFE)
been a hell of a day at work. definitely going to need to have a few drinks and unwind at the Charleston tonight.
up up and get me away from here.
(gah!)
Good planning and poor management have left me with little to do. A depressing muted cadence punctuating the end of three years of my labor.

i’m a desperately lazy man and even i have found the gumption to bike to work twice this month.
GET. ON. IT.
about two weeks ago i came to realize a few things:
accordingly, i resolved to pick up some extra work to help save up for the move. my 9 - 5 non-profit office gig fills me with a lot of warm fuzzies and pays me very reasonably but as a result of my… let’s say more indulgent proclivities i still live (rather comfortably i swear!) from pay check to pay check. given that i am a complete glutton and refuse to “tone done” my standard of living (“you heard me correctly sir, i’ll have TWO cinnamon twists AND a fistful of salsas”) finding easy seasonal part-time work seems like the way to go.
ANYWAYS, under the strangest circumstances imaginable, i landed a gig bouncing at Bangers & Lace. it’s a charming little bar / restaurant in Wicker Park just west of Ashland on Division. the beer is tasty, the food is rich and some portion of the proceeds (presumably) go towards my pay check. i would consider it a a member of the vanguard in the “Ampersand movement (&M)” of hip gastro-pubs opening in Chicago’s northwest side.
i haven’t done this kind of work since i bounced at the Irish Oak in Wrigleyville in October of 2008. i’m excited but i can only pray that the fast paced world of standing around and being patient with drunk ass holes hasn’t changed so much that it’s passed me by.
i’m not sure if this is something that Tumblr cares about but I THOUGHT I’D SHARE.
